The Space Between
This is a preview of the first one hundred pages of The Space Between. The novel features characters and general plot elements which had been developed for a game called Void of Life. It is a work in progress and may contain spelling and grammatical errors, as well as the plot holes and thematic incongruities, as might be expected in early drafts.
Void of Life
Void of Life was a concept for a sandbox game that takes place in a future where nearly every planet, moon, and asteroid in the solar system has been occupied. The concept is for a "top down" space shooter like Sinistar, but in an open sandbox map where the player can take jobs, chose allies, and explore. Or to put it in the crassest terms, The original GTA, but in space. The underlying motivation for this project was to outline a simple and fun game that was within my ability to create, within which I could tell fun and exciting stories.
The modest gameplay was interesting to develop. However at the time I originally began tinkering with the idea I was struck by a few setbacks as I was forced to switch engines twice. While unable to make much progress on the gameplay, I was still developing quests and narratives. At some point I saw that having developed so much of the narrative detached from anything more than the initial gameplay mechanics I was constantly redeveloping, the narrative might be worth pursuing on it’s own.
